Figure Drawing Etiquette

Doors open at 6:15. Enter through the back door in the alley. Our door is marked and directly across from Cozy Taberna. Please arrive early before the session to ensure you are set up before starting. Doors will be locked at 6:30.

The class starts with 3 warm-up drawings, once warmed up, we move on to the first pose and then have a brief break before finishing with the final pose. Bring drawing materials of newsprint and heavier drawing paper for the longer poses. Also bring charcoal, pencils, pen, or ink, along with a drawing board. Some people like to work in watercolor or oil or acrylic. Easels and drawing horses are provided.

Models receive $60/session. If you know of models, please let us know!

Figure Drawing Class Etiquette

It is of utmost importance, and it is expected and understood, that everyone adhere to the following code of etiquette whenever you are participating in life drawing sessions. You are deemed to have understood and agreed to the following when you sign up.

Almost all life drawing studio etiquette is based on respect for the model. Remember, the model is putting themselves in a vulnerable position for the benefit of the artists, so keeping models happy and comfortable is our priority.

Please show the utmost respect for all models at all times.

  • Arrive early to set up. Doors open at 6:15 and drawing promptly starts at 6:30. When the model disrobes we will close/lock the door.
  • Late arrivals will not be admitted to reduce disruptions and respect the focus and privacy of the model.
  • Silence devices.
  • Do not take photos of the model.
  • Do not touch the model or invade the model’s personal space and always observe social distancing.
  • Do not speak with the model during posing. Speak to the facilitator if you need anything at all.
  • If you would like to compliment the model's work, keep language professional and drawing-related.
  • If a model is comfortable, they may approach you about your work, but this interaction should never be initiated by the artist. If you have a question, refer to the facilitator.
  • Do not critique work unless asked (this goes for artists and models).

We encourage you to let your creativity flow on your paper or canvas. Draw! Paint! Create! Learn! Talk to other artists! Talk to the facilitator! This will allow everyone to continue to create and learn in a safe space.

We look forward to seeing you!
