About The Persistence of Memory
One of the most recognizable work of Surrealism, this 1931 painting by Salvador Dalí is often referred to as “Melting Clocks”.

Fairly small in size, it measures 9.5 inches x 13 inches or 24 cm x 33 cm. It was given by an anonymous donor to the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, where it still hangs today.

The soft melting pocket watch epitomizes Dali’s theory of “softness” and “hardness”, which was central to his thinking at the time.

About The Kiss
This oil-on-canvas created by Austrian painter Gustav Klimt has become his most popular work. The painting depicts a couple embracing each other, their bodies entwined in elaborate beautiful robes decorated in a style influenced by the contemporary Art Nouveau style. It was first exhibited under the title Liebespaar (The Lovers).

Besides paint, Klimt used gold leaves, silver and platinum in this work. He was inspired to use gold leaves after visiting Italian churches in which he saw Byzantine mosaics.

Klimt himself may be the man in painting, however this has not ever been proven. If it is in fact Klimt, this would be the artist’s only known self-portrait.

About The Great Wave off Kanagawa
This is certainly the most recognizable work of Japanese art in the world. Also called The Wave , this work by Japanese ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai is a woodblock print (not a painting). Published between 1829 and 1833, it is the first print in the artist's series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji .

The image depicts an enormous wave threatening three boats off the coast in the Sagami Bay while Mount Fuji rises in the background.
