Let 'er Rip Collages: Using Vintage Book Parts

Let’s take a deep dive into collage ripping apart and dismantling old worn-out vintage hardback books to scavenge for materials: book linen, interesting spines with gauze and gluey bits, not to mention fun illustrations and fancy text. We will also be ripping apart old paperbacks (the older the better) altering the covers with sandpaper and cutting out blocks of text. We will spend the afternoon creating collages using our stacks and piles of book parts, and we will use the book boards from the dismantled books as our substrates.

Throughout the day, we will discuss collecting materials; composition and design elements; the importance of color and value; explore a variety of techniques, and how to display completed collages. There will be demos with plenty of time for hands on experimentation.

• 5 old hardback books, the older, more worn, and wonky the better (to be pulled apart and cut up)
• 2 old vintage paperback books (to be ripped up and altered)
• Golden Semi-Gloss Soft Gel (8 oz.) (if you have any kind of gel medium, that can be used, it does not have to be Golden; just be sure it is not a liquid medium, it needs to be a gel)
• Paper cutting scissors
• 1” inexpensive flat brush
• Magazine or catalog to use as “glue” paper
• Small assortment of collage papers: preprinted tissue paper, handmade paper pieces, vintage handwritten letters, typewritten pages, sheet music, old newspaper clippings – whatever you have on hand.
• Wax paper
• Water container
