In this class we’ll step outside the ordinary to create a little pocketed Leporello accordion books (4” x 4”)—a book* that unfolds, expands, reveals, conceals, and invites you to tuck little treasures inside.
We’ll explore the possibilities of folds, pockets, layers, and surprises. Your book can become a tiny visual journal, a collection of secrets, a place for words and images, a portable gallery, a gift for someone special, or simply a beautiful object that begs to be opened. I’m making several of these this year (with cash tucked into the pockets) as Christmas gifts for my grandchildren (3) and great grandchildren (5).
We will also play with assorted papers, ephemera, images, stickers, and fabric to create little works of art to tuck into the pockets.
No bookmaking experience necessary. Come ready to fold something unexpected and discover where the next page takes you.
(*You can also make a larger version. Check with GG for size options.)
• Paper – Paper should be stiff enough to hold a fold. The heavily textured or limp handmade papers don’t work well. Scrapbook-type paper works great and so do many of the rolled papers at the Art Department. You can ask the store staff if you have questions about whether a certain paper will work.
• For the inside book pages: 8 different designs of papers measuring 8” x 8” each (No need to cut in advance; we will cut papers in class)
• For the book pockets: 3 different designs of papers (can be the same as pages or different designs) measuring 8” x 3.5”
• For the book covers: 2 papers (can be same as pages or different designs) measuring 6” x 6”
