Class FAQs/Cancelation Policy

Loose watercolor painting accentuates creativity and expressiveness, allowing light and shadow to create effects, rather than painting in every detail. Through exercises, demonstrations, and information-sharing you will increase your confidence and skills with loose watercolor painting. Using what you’ve practiced in class, you will then be guided through the process of creating a complete painting to take home.

If you’ve taken my class before, we’ll be learning new techniques involving sponges, wax resist, preserving white space, and the use of masking fluid.

Supply List

Note: All regular-priced supplies are available at 20% off from Art Department for this class.

Paints
Buy the best quality paint you can afford, either artist or student grade. Windsor Newton, M Graham, and Daniel Smith have some great introductory pan or tube sets, or you can buy individual tubes.

Bring 3 primary colors (red, blue and yellow) Examples are below.

Additional helpful colors that you can bring if you want include: Burnt Umber, Yellow Ochre and Payne’s Grey, plus anything else that you’re moved to bring.

Paper
We’ll be doing lots of practice so a 9x12 cold press pad or block of Canson or Fabriano practice paper will work great (i.e. not 100% cotton). If you already own a 100% cotton cold press pad or block, that will be ideal for your final painting. Another option is to buy 1 big sheet of 100% cotton cold press and cut it into 6 sheets 10x11 sheets.

Other supplies:

Masking fluid (I like the blue Pebeo drawing gum)
A small wax candle or wax resist stick
A natural sponge or a few inches of a household sponge
Board to tape paper down if you have a pad or loose paper
White artist's tape to tape down paper if you have a pad or loose paper
Brushes (Good, Better (Neptune, Winsor & Netwon), Best)
      1” flat brush
1 small round brush (in size 2-6)
1 larger round brush (in size 12-14)
Palette with mixing space
2 containers for water (pint or larger);
Paper towels; Kleenex; Small rag to wipe brush on
